History
WSOHOIDPS (A SHIP IN THE WOODS) began in the fall of 2010 when a group of artists and creative professionals sought out residency in a mid-century home in the hills of Del Mar, CA with the notion of creating a community driven hub for art and culture. The unique compound, with 3 detached studios and pending future demolition, allowed an opportunity for creative experimentation. Lead by co-founder RJ Brooks the property was transformed into a venue worthy of displaying world-class works from both established and up-and-coming artists. With growing interest from the community A SHIP IN THE WOODS foundation was established in March of 2013.
LUGANO House
The house was originally built in 1954 by a local photographer and acted as a summer home for the actor George Brent. It then served as a satellite to the North County Repertory Theatre company, offering lodging to visiting actors and performers. After decades spent quietly as a domestic dwelling, the property was purchased and it's structures scheduled for eventual demolition. It was with this inevitable future already in place that a new collection of individuals would move in to conceive of the house's final iteration and initiate its' last life as WSOHOIDPS.
quote:
The nonprofit emerged organically from the simple gesture of inviting people into our home who sought a place to have elevated dialogues in art/culture in an unbound and relaxed environment. Many were attracted by this and came to experience the work we had on exhibit and also came to find each other which turned into a thriving community of creative thinkers and supporters. Our early events were intimate and mostly by word of mouth. The last show at our original location welcomed 400+ guests and featured international artists the De La Torre brothers with a special performance by the local band Prayers. It was a testament to the time, money, and effort we invested into our vision to help be resource and strengthen the creative community in North County San Diego. Our collective programming of events and residency attracted creatives from outside of the area and has spawned many new relationships and dialogues linking San Diego to the broader art world. Notable guests: Wayne Coyne, Dennis McKenna, Crispin Glover, DJ Douggpound, Tommy Guerrero, Pall Jenkins, HTRK, Ritual Howls, among others... - RJB
FELICITA House
Today the SHIP has moved to its new permanent home in Escondido, CA and is set on a 2 acre densely vegetated lot with lush gardens, oak tree grove, 1,000 year old stream, residency, walking trails and bridges. It is located in North County San Diego, adjacent to 50 acre Felicita Park. The new home was purchased by its founders in 2015 to secure the space as a lasting presence and resource for the arts and culture scene.
After another substantial renovation project by co-founder RJ Brooks with help from artist Addison Stonestreet, the new SHIP is poised for further experimentation and exploration through art, new media, music, culture, science, and more. The new location continues to offer a residency program for established and up-and-coming artists, community engaged events, collaborations between interdisciplinary thinkers, lectures, communal dinners, and various gatherings in pursuit of elevated discourse throughout Southern California.
